The
annual Midsummer Fun Day in aid of the Countryside
Alliance
was held on Saturday 25th June 2011 at
Cinder Hill,
Horsted Keynes by kind permission of Rory Clarke.
This year SEGS were responsible for organising the whole
event and
it was decided to change the format to get away from the
more ‘formal
test judging’ and try and make it a really ‘fun day’ with something
to suit all handlers, standards, abilities and breeds.
In order to encourage complete beginners, inexperienced handlers
and non-members to ‘have a go’ there were 10 different ‘scurry’ tests
to choose from. All were run against the clock with time penalties
given for any ‘indiscretions’.
These ‘scurry’ tests were divided into the ‘Woodcock’ group, with
a choice of ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver’ level,
and the ‘Partridge’ group,
specifically designed for the
new or inexperienced handler and dog.
The object throughout was for
everyone to succeed and if handlers
needed to help their dogs they
were encouraged to do so.
Judging by the number of entries, with over 50 in both the ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver’ levels
of the ‘Woodcock’ group and 100 in the ‘Partridge’ group,
the changes seem to have been popular. In fact, a breakdown of the
shows that there were over 850 individual ‘scurry’ tests
run during
the day which is amazing!
Apart from the ‘scurry’ tests there was also the chance
to enter the ‘Best of the Bunch’ – a light hearted ‘beauty
parade’ to find the ‘best looking’ working breed
dog and puppy.

With
SEGS donating £580 and the raffle some £130 the day was
a
great success with an excellent £710 raised for the ‘Countryside
Alliance’. Of course, it was a huge team effort with over 40 volunteers
and helpers ensuring everything ran smoothly.
Thank you to everyone who
came along
to help book people in, throw
dummies, fire guns, click stopwatches or
make tea and coffee and also
grateful thanks to the sponsors – Bartholomews, Kent
Wool Growers
and Sparks
Farm Pet Foods – for their generous donation
of prizes.
If you attended the ‘fun day’ we would be interested to hear
your
comments – either good or bad!
Also, if you have any photos of the
day you could send us that would be great. We may be able to use
them on the website or in the next ‘Year Book’.

Some
of the award winners at Cinder Hill
Although
many of the award winners were at the prize giving
inevitably others were unable to be there and some of the prizes
of those missing were taken by friends to be passed on.
We have the remaining prizes and rosettes, so if you are listed
as an award winner please contact either Matt or David Breach
