The annual Midsummer Working Test was held on
Saturday 26th June 2010, at Cinder Hill, Horsted Keynes by
kind permission of Rory Clarke, and in conjunction with
the Countryside Alliance.

The annual ‘funday’ is always popular and despite extremely hot weather
and various other events there was a good entry of 88 runners for the
‘Working Test Competition’ – 21 ‘Open’, 38 ‘Novice’ and 29 ‘Pre-Novice’.
Judges for the day were Martin Bagg, Jo Hawkesworth, Bryan Kent,
Francis Hlisnikowski and Beth Rayner.

The ‘Working Test Competition’ consisted of 5 ‘tests’ with variations
for ‘Open’, ‘Novice’ and ‘Pre-Novice’ categories. Test 1 for the ‘Open’ was
a ‘mark’ falling in cover beyond the bank across a pond (‘unseen’ in cover
on the far bank for ‘Novice’; ‘mark’ onto the bank for ‘Pre-Novice’). Test 2
for all categories was an ‘unseen’ with no shot up a track (with shorter
distances for ‘Novice’ and ‘Pre-Novice’). Test 3 for the ‘Open’ was an
‘unseen’ out in a field, up a track and over a jump (shorter distances and
a ‘mark’ for the ‘Novice’ and ‘Pre–Novice’). Test 4 for the ‘Open’ was an
‘unseen’ on the far bank over a pond at an angle, crossing a projecting
spit midway (a ‘mark’ in the water behind the spit for ‘Novice’; a ‘mark’
into the water to the side of the spit for ‘Pre-Novice’). Test 5 for the
‘Open’ was some ‘heel work’ followed by a long ‘mark’ up a sloping field
(the ‘mark’ at shorter distances for the ‘Novice’ and ‘Pre–Novice’).

Once again everyone had the chance to gamble by using their ‘Joker’.
By choosing one of the 5 ‘tests’ and telling the Judge before they started
that they were playing their ‘Joker’ the score for that particular ‘test’
would then be doubled.

As the ‘funday’ is open to all it attracts a number of ‘newcomers’ and a
variety of breeds. Every opportunity was given for everyone to ‘achieve’
in some way and the Judges’ patience, good humour and all the advice
and encouragement they gave the ‘newcomers’ was much appreciated.

Some of the award winners at Cinder Hill

As well as the ‘Working Test Competition’ there were also several
other ‘scurries’ – a ‘Jumping Lane’, ‘Dog and Gun’, ‘Jumping Rabbit’,
‘Double Mark’ and ‘Hunt-Up’. Once again these proved not only to
be great fun but also very competitive as points gained here were
added to those for the ‘working tests’ resulting in a total for the
Victor Ludorum awards.
